I can feel his eyes on me all day long, but he hasn’t said a word to me.
I’ve almost stopped to apologize a dozen times, but it doesn’t feel like the right time or place. We’re both working.
I deliver umbrella drinks poolside until the sun dips down low on the horizon, then move around collecting empty glasses and wiping down tables. My feet hurt and I’m exhausted. Being in the hot sun all day has a tendency to suck the life out of anyone.
Probably why the people just lay there all day soaking in the rays, barely moving. I lift the tray filled with dirty dishes up and rest the edge on my shoulder to carry it.
I’m good until I get to the door and realize I can’t open it while balancing the tray. I feel him behind me, even before I see him.
“Need some help?”
I wouldn’t blame him if he sounded snarky, but his tone is almost unemotional. Bland. When I glance up at him, all I see is the polite interest you’d give a stranger. I did this.
“Thank you.” I open and close my mouth because now’s the perfect time to apologize, but nothing comes out. Then the door is open and I’m moving through it. I turn to finally say it, but he’s not there.
All I see is the closed door.
My chest aches as I carry the tray to the kitchen. The hotel has a full service staff that keeps working until after midnight, so all I have to do is set down the tray next to the dishwasher and I’m done.
I clock out and change into my casual clothes in the staff bathroom. The hall is quiet, though I can hear the clinking of dishes and the low murmur of voices coming from the kitchen.
When I push the door to the pool open, the lights are off and there’s no sign of my Hero. Disappointment sinks down into my gut and I let the door swing shut. As I make my way out through the side door to the street, I try to push all the weird emotions swirling around in my chest out so that I can focus on what I need to do tonight.
Tomorrow starts rehearsals at Folly River Park. The shows start Friday night. Three days is what I’ll have to get used to swimming in a huge fish tank. I need to practice my breath holding just a little more.
The street is filled with people as I make my way to the house. There is revelry in the air that never gets old. Vacation excitement mixes with the live music coming from the bar on the corner to create something magical. I let myself soak in the sights and sounds before going inside to grab something to eat.
I’ve got to wait until it’s dark to go practice swimming.
Yoseph didn’t say specifically not to let people see me in my tail, but the organizer of Siren Under the Sea has been building the hype for weeks now.
